The Mandarin’s Newmarket 1,000 Guineas Racecard for 5th May 2024

The Mandarin’s Newmarket 1,000 Guineas Racecard for 5th May

William Hill Pretty Polly Stakes (Listed) (Fillies) 1.50
Kalpana (nap)
Andrew Balding’s Kalpana has quickly progressed into a smart filly, and gets the vote for the opener on 1,000 Guineas day. From her win on the all-weather at Wolverhampton, where Hayley Turner had a job on her hands to keep Kalpana running in a straight line, she blew the field out of the water on her course and turf debut here at the Craven meeting last month, going 10 lengths clear. Now Oisin Murphy takes over on the reins, and Kalpana is the one to beat

William Hill Dahlia Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies & Mares) 2.25
Running Lion
Oisin Murphy can have a cracking start to Sunday’s book of rides if Running Lion wins here. This race has gone to John & Thady Gosden no less that six times in the last ten years, and Running Lion goes to post here with a win in last year’s Pretty Polly Stakes already under her belt. Charlie Appleby’s Silver Lady won at Meydan back in January, so has to be feared on this drying ground, while Pam Sly’s Astral Beau wouldn’t mind more rain. A good contest in store, but Oisin Murphy must fancy his chances here

William Hill Handicap (Heritage Handicap) 3.00
Intinso
Intinso has done plenty of his racing on the all-weather, but returns to turf here and a new trip. He’s a Siyouni gelding, so not obviously bred for this staying trip, but the Gosden team think it’s worth a try and he has started this campaign well enough with a win at Wolverhampton and a running on third at Kempton Park. Hollie Doyle’s back in the saddle and Intinso looks a solid bet for this Handicap

Qipco 1,000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1) (Fillies) 3.40
Fallen Angel (nb)
A top class renewal in store, where Aidan O’Brien’s Ylang Ylang, Charlie Appleby’s Dance Sequence and French raider Ramatuelle all have claims. However, the preference is for Karl Burke’s Fallen Angel, who has form over Ylang Ylang from their clash in the Moyglare at The Curragh, finding plenty for pressure when asked the question by Vespertilio. The well bred Ramatuelle might rate a bigger threat and lines up here race fit after taking the runners-up spot in the Prix Imprudence at Deauville, while Dance Sequence looks like the Moulton Paddocks first string with William Buick in the saddle. Fallen Angel to win a Classic for the in-form Karl Burke in a cracking contest

Tattersalls £40,000 EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes 4.15
Mountain Breeze
Mountain Breeze is closely related to Dewhurst winner Pinatubo, and can take this Fillies’ Novice Stakes on her debut. She’ll surely be running over longer trips soon enough, but this looks a good starting point for the in-form Charlie Appleby and is William Buick’s choice of the three lining up in the Godolphin silks

Tattersalls £40,000 EBF Novice Stakes 4.50
The Actor
Richard Hannon holds the key to this Novice Stakes with The Actor, who course experience gives him the edge over the rest of this field. He claimed the runners-up spot over this course and distance at the Craven meeting last month, and should come on for that run. He’s a Harry Angel colt so plenty of pace in the breeding, and taken to go one better than last time

HKJC Riding High Together Handicap 5.25
Cynosure
It could pay to side with Andrew Balding’s Cynosure for the closer at Newmarket. Race fitness is assured after a win at Lingfield on the all-weather, showing plenty of toe in the final furlong to make up a 4 length deficit. This No Nay Never gelding should be right in the mix, so gets the nudge with Kevin Stott knowing how to get a tune out of him
