Jaysella & Carolines’ Saturday Selections from Newmarket & The Curragh

Newmarket

Tattersalls Online Royal Lodge Stakes (Group 2) (Colts & Geldings) 1.50
Daytona
There’s been a lot of money going down this week for George Boughey’s Bow Echo, but boys, I’m gonna buck that trend and go for Daytona instead. It could be that Bow Echo has flattered to deceive in his first two starts. I’m not knocking his last race though, he got headed in the final half furlong but rallied gamely, ultimately coming out on top, but I did dig Daytona’s win at the same Listed level at Naas in July, and that bit of form kinda stood out for me, as I made a little note in my book. Daytona’s stablemate, Action, is closely related to dual Derby winner Lambourn, so might be wanting further in time, and he’s the danger to Daytona, for me. Yep, Daytona it is with Action keeping him honest for the Royal Lodge.

Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1) (Fillies) 2.25
True Love (nap)
An absolute cracker of a race this, and really good arguments can be made for a few of these. But, a girl’s gotta make her er mind up, so it’s True Love that’s got my Cupid’s Arrow. She comes with a caution though, as she was reported lame in the Keeneland Phoenix, so it’s taken on trust that she’s fully tuned up for this return to the track. I also prefer to go on the form from the GAIN Railway Stakes also at the Curragh in July, when she was well clear of the field, including the Phoenix winner, Power Blue. So, Royal Fixation landed the Lowther at York, where we’d fancied Richard Hughes’ America Queen, but I for one think those placings can be reversed now that America Queen has a bit more racing under her saddle, while the second Ballydoyle inmate to mention is Beautify, who won the Airlie Stud in front of Lady Iman and will be fine returned to 6 furlongs. True Love to take my breath away, with America Queen the danger, while bargain basement buy Anthelia and Donnacha O’Brien’s Havana Anna are well priced each way picks, if that’s your bag.

Tattersalls Middle Park Stakes (Group 1) (Colts) 3.00
Wise Approach (nb)
A wide draw in Stall 8, but that’s about the only negative point I can see for Charlie Appleby’s Wise Approach. Looking at his last run, when he was just a half-length from stablemate Gstaad, with the outstanding filly Venetian Sun too good for both of them in the Prix Morny, one of the most important Juvenile races in Europe, Wise Approach has to be the one to beat. Now then, Clive Cox’s Copull didn’t show his best in the Prix Morny, but is better than that, while Aidan O’Brien’s Kansas has a knack of nearly getting there over 5 furlongs, so should relish the step up to 6 furlongs here. Joseph O’Brien’s The Publican’s Son outran his odds last time, so has some appeal under Oisin Murphy, but they’ve all gotta beat Wise Approach, despite the draw.

Fifth Column
Yabba Dabba Doo, They’re gonna start in Cambridgeshire and finish in Suffolk! That’s how big a race this is, but joking aside it’s a pretty big field and ultra, ultra competitive. Now, for those of you that like your trends analysis, the top-weight has won for the last two years, so that gives Karl Burke’s Boiling Point a place on my shortlist, while Ed Walker’s Fort George is one going the right way and has Oisin Murphy for company. Treble Tee has got himself a place at the top of the ante post markets, much to do with being 4lb well-in after his Doncaster win, and John & Thady Gosdens’ Westridge has the brilliant Billy Loughnane booked so has to be considered. However, Fifth Column is the one that’s floating my boat, with William Buick in the hot seat just the ticket, and a Gosden one-two with Westridge is easy to picture!

The Curragh

Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club Beresford Stakes (Group 2) 2.35
Geryon
I’m thinking that this Group 2 can go to Ger Lyons’ Geryon, who wouldn’t have to improve much from his last run here to take this. I do believe that getting within 2 lengths of Aidan O’Brien’s Constitution River was very solid form, and if anything the extra furlong here should be just the thing, and with that rival absent, Ger Lyons must fancy his chance of picking up some Black Type. Ballydoyle send out two, Hawk Mountain and Port Of Spain, with both proven over the mile here the last day. These are my three, but it’s Geryon to get the better of the Ballydoyle pair in my book.

Goffs Million 3.45
Composing
Another chance to see the exciting Composing, who was fourth in the Moyglare the last day, but looks to be in calmer waters here. That said, Joseph O’Brien’s Green Sense was a fine third in the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes, and can keep Composing up to her work under Dylan Browne McMonagle, so the odds-on price being offered up for Composing this week does look a bit of the thin end of the wedge! However, Aidan O’Brien’s in flying form just now, so it’s going to take a braver lady than me to say Composing is going to get beaten, just that it could be closer than the prices suggest. There could be a bit of rain about, which would play into the hands of Green Sense, but Composing just about edges it, on balance.
